Gang Starr
La storia dei Gang Starr comincia nel 1990, in quel di Brooklyn, con il disco “No More Mr. Nice Guy” (uscito per la fu grande Wild Pitch Records). Autori dell’album sono un MC di Boston, Keith Elam noto nel giro indipendente come Guru (acronimo per Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal), ed un dj proveniente da Houston ma cresciuto nell’ambito musicale di New York, Chris Martin a.k.a. DJ Premier. “No More Mr. Nice Guy” è influenzato dal jazz, caratteristica che non gli garantisce grande visibilità ma che spinge un certo Spike Lee a contattare Preemo e Guru. “Jazz Thing”, incisa con il sassofonista Brandford Marsalis, diventa così una colonna portante della soundtrack di “Mo’ Better Blues”, film del noto regista. L’attenzione si sposta sul jazz rap, di cui i Gang Starr si fanno portavoce insieme ad altri artisti, tra i quali ricordiamo gli Stetsasonic di Prince Paul. Arriva così “Step in the Arena” (Chrysalis), seguito appena un anno dopo da “Daily Operation”. Comincia a sentirsi la vera identità dei Gang Star, caratterizzata dalla voce swingata di Guru e dalle produzioni sempre più minimali e hardcore di Premier. Comincia ance a formarsi una vera e propria crew intorno al marchio Gang Starr, e la Gang Starr foundation trova i suoi capifila in promettenti MC come Lil’ Dap e Jeru the Damanja.
Le strade si dividono. Premier espande il giro di collaborazioni, diventando negli anni a venire un must e producendo per praticamente tutti gli artisti della scena newyorkese. Da Nas a Jay-Z, da Bigge a KRS-One, tutti lo vogliono. E’ Preemo a firmare brani quali “Unbelievable” (The Notorious B.I.G.), “Memory Lane” (Nas), “My World” (O.C.)…potremmo continuare per ore. Con la vecchia conoscenza Brandford Marsalis forma invece i Backshot LeFonque, sorta di esperimento d’acid jazz nel quale le batterie di Preemo incontrano il sax di Marsalis. Da uesto insolito matrimonio nascono ben due dischi, “Buckshot LeFonque” (1994) e “Music Evolution” (1997). Dal canto suo, Guru organizza un progetto destinato a diventare un marchio: il JazzMatazz, serie di dischi nei quali il rap di Mr. Elam incontra la musica jazz (e non solo). Il primo volume, considerato una sorta di classico della musica black, esce nel 1992 e vede, tra le collaborazioni, addirittura i nomi di Donald Byrd e Roy Ayers. La collana JazzMatazz si prolungherà fino ai nostri giorni, incontrando i più svariati generi musicali, dal soul al blues.
Ma torniamo ai Gang Starr, che nel 1994 si ricostituiscono per pubblicare “Hard to Earn”. Ormai i due sono una garanzia, già personaggi simbolo vista la loro riluttanza nei confronti di chi fa successo facile. E’ dedicata proprio alla loro tendenza anticommerciale il singolo più famoso del disco, “Mass Appeal”, diventato il loro pezzo più rappresentativo. Passano quattro anni e tocca rinverdire la propria credibilità. “Moment of Truth” riesce nell’impresa, grazie a due Guru e Preemo in stato di grazie e degli ospiti formidabili (Scarface, Inspectah Deck, M.O.P. e molti altri), e conquista il disco d’oro. A dieci anni dalla loro formazione sono ancora uno dei gruppi più solidi e rispettati della scena, casca quindi a fagiolo una raccolta di successi e rarità. “Full Clip”, questo il tiolo, presenta anche tre pezzi inediti, tra i quali spicca la title-track dedicata al rapper della D.I.T.C. Big L. Proseguono i lavori paralleli, tra i quali spicca “Jazzmatazz Streetsoul”, terzo capitolo di Guru dedicato principalmente al soul e all’RnB. Ci vorrano altri cinque anni perchè i fan possano riascoltare un disco a firma Gang Star, e nel 2003 “The Ownerz” si presenta come un disco cardine per la scena underground. Ad oggi, “The Ownerz” è l’ultimo capitolo della prestigiosa discografia, visto che Preemo e Guru sono “momentaneamente separati” (parole del produttore, anche se Guru ha spesso dichiarato di aver concluso il suo lavoro nel gruppo). Proseguono comunque le rispettive carriere soliste, che portano Premier a produrre una sempre più ampia schiera di artisti, non necessariamente limitata al solo rap (tra i nomi troviamo persino Christina Aguilera), mentre Guru unisce le forze con il produttore Solar, con il quale comporrà il suo primo disco solista “Version 7.0 The Street Scriptures” e il quarto capitolo del Jazzmatazz.
